Pillar two: Sustainable sourcing

SUSTAINABLE SOURCING

Since 2010 we have been offering Fairtrade coffee, tea and hot chocolate whilst further consolidating our supply chain to remove 5% of deliveries.

One of the key challenges facing mankind is that, as economies develop across the globe, the supply of raw materials is increasingly unable to keep up with demand. The extraction, production and harvesting of raw materials can have significant environmental and social impacts which may have long-term and far-reaching consequences. If everyone in the world lived as we do in the UK, we would need three planets to support us.

As this is clearly unsustainable, we have identified a number of key areas we believe we have a responsibility to address - and can do something positive about. Managing our products, raw materials and ingredients in this way not only makes good environmental sense, but good business sense too. Sustainable sourcing is increasingly important to our clients and consumers who want to know where and how our products are sourced.

Our purchasing and supply chain team work with suppliers and a number of organisations on a range of initiatives and we are committed to reporting on our progress and setting challenging goals. As a minimum, we will always meet the requirements set by Compass Group PLC's Sustainable Purchasing Policy.

Sustainable sourcing objectives

Our sustainable sourcing strategy includes the following objectives:

  • Provide full traceability of products and suppliers within our approved supply chain to ensure that sustainable, ethical and safety standards are built in to our requirements
  • Support British sourcing, working with farmers and growers to use local and regional produce made, grown or reared to support local or regional requirements
  • Work in partnership with our clients, suppliers and distributors to reduce the impact of our business on the environment
  • Support Fairtrade farmers and their communities.

All of these objectives are made possible by sourcing our food responsibly and our fully managed supply chain.
